Imperial Auction House & Royal Pop-Up Garden at Kew
Dr. Constance Lau
year of making
Kew Gardens emerged during the British Empire when international trade routes facilitated its acquisition of specimens. Britain appropriated commodities such as rice, coffee and tea, the latter now being a quintessential part of British culture.
The Imperial Auction House and Royal Pop-up Garden at Kew seeks to explore Britain’s Imperial and Royal legacy by housing a tea room and rice paddy with views to Queen Charlotte’s Cottage. This site was used by the British Royal family during King George’s residence at Kew as a weekend retreat to drink tea and enjoy nature and has been left untouched since 1898 to preserve natural conservation.
The project invites Britain’s remaining overseas territories to exhibit at Kew by auctioning selected garden plots situated along the current conservation boundary. The plots will have no physical border to encourage the fusion of British and overseas flora, reflecting the expansion and demise of the British Empire.
