“The Isle of Harris is found where land ends and sea begins. The isolation of the island translates the world beyond into one of dreams and fairytales. And as Aldo Rossi describes Teatro del Mondo’s location in Venice, as a place where architecture ends and the world of imagination, or even the irrational begin. Teatro del Mondo has now come over the sea and entered into Tarbert harbour and brings with it a floating world of characters and figures. These characters take form in the notion of a voyage, a vessel and a bridge which are then repeated and distributed across the site, attempting to read the ground’s formation and challenge the endless horizon, the rising mountains and the village folding into the hillside. These conditions can be seen as a series of frames in an animated architectural promenade. The centre responds to the transience of Teatro by using movement as a counterpoint to fixed spaces, where the circulation around and within the building are relating directly to the temporal experience.”
