Cutting edge thinking in the making of architectural surfaces has lead to the evolution of “metasurfaces.” A metasurface is more than a flat enclosure; it performs the duties of structure and can create space. This thesis uses the more complex and multifunctional role of metasurface as an experiment to test the viability of producing compound effects that are influenced by specific environmental phenomena, material and manufacturing techniques. The method to explore metasurfaces is through the empirical testing of materials to understand their properties for making enclosure, structure, and space. This thesis explores a system of aggregated cells in which scale and material are determined by its performative capacity and how it affects the perception of space. The variation within the scale of each cell allow for interactions to occur between humans and nature in a way that blurs wall, space, and environment. This aggregation of cells, become a metasurface.
