The aim of this analytical and discovery exercise is to sharpen the student’s sense of observation of everyday life in order to explore
possible design opportunities before proposing a design solution. The scenario that was given to us was to shift the paradigm of recycling bins, bringing more purpose and awareness to the action of recycling.
Recycling is made more interactive unlike previous designs of bins. By creating a densely packed PET bottle sculpture of a bin, users are encouraged to play a part to recycling through the gesture of placing a bottle into the empty spaces of the bins. A latent pattern of braille words “Reduce, Reuse and Recycle” is created around the bin, signaling a subtle cry for the whole society to start involving the whole community to recycle. At night, the recycling bin acts as a beacon, shining its light through its bottle across the space.
