The final project for Stefan Sagmeister's class "Can Design Touch Someone's Heart?"
The assignment was to come up with something that you've learned in your life and then illustrate that sentence typographically in some meaningful way. He stressed the idea of working in a way that you have never done before, either working with new media or with a form or process that is unfamiliar.
I chose the sentence "Cynicism Leads to Nothing." I decided to work in an ornamental/macabre design motif. I designed each word around a different process (engraving, printmaking, embroidery, etching) and gave each type treatment its own setting and tied the four words together through the tone and style of the photography. I was inspired by 16th and 17th century Dutch vanitas still life painitings and wanted to bring a sense of death and mortality in to each frame. The series communicates that cynicism, while elegant on the surface is little more than a beautiful mausoleum.
