The Rotch Travelling Scholarship allowed our design studio to travel to Bangkok, Thailand to study and focus on a municipal boat pier along San Saeb Canal in the heart of Bangkok. The boat piers are part of a low-cost and efficient water-commuting network that connects the historical ancient city with the eastern suburbs. The main Ban Krua Community spreads along the north side of the canal and can only be reached from the pier by a highly circuitous route.
Our project links the Ban Krua community to the Tesco Lotus supermarket, which currently turns its back to the canal. Multi-level community public spaces, markets and green roofs are created as new interventions to be adjacent to the canal and bridge intersection, while the parking garage of the supermarket is appropriated for nighttime markets and recreation activities.
