arabic calligraphy museum: visual identity
Branding the Arabic Calligraphy Museum:from a collection to a collective experience
This is my major project research and outcome for an MA in graphic branding and identity at the London College of Communication. The project was completed in November 2009.
It consists of a branding proposal for the Arabic Calligraphy Museum aiming at reviving the museum, in the Middle East, as a contemporary platform of cultural dialogue between local and international audiences.
The visual identity’s main asset is a modular grid that generated a bilingual typeface for Arabic and Roman alphabets. The grid is inspired by principles of geometry and ornament found in Arabic calligraphy and Islamic art. A modernized square kufic symbol for the Arabic Calligraphy Museum is equally designed to fit on the grid accordingly to the classical rules of the square Kufic script.
The identity's graphic elements and applications are presented in a book which further explores the usage of colour inspired from the museum's collection.
