The ‘Bies Safari’ is an exploration in redefining the zoo. As a freshwater tide natural park in the Netherlands, the Biesbosch is enclosed by a forest, polders and a river. The diversity in landscapes and animals are interconnected with the introduction of a pathway that follows a grid system.
Context parameters define the height of the grid, hereby adapting to the environment whilst maintaining the inherent qualities and conditions. In this 3D system it is possible to walk through trees, fly over the polder, submerge in water and be on eye-level with animals.
Programmatic elements are located in pavilions at pathway-intersections, subtly suggesting a route and clarifying the type of crossing as a node (vertical, directionless) or an endpoint (horizontal, directional). The facades of the pavilions mirror the steppingstones in their context as a mean to connect the built interventions with the surrounding landscape.
