Ice Cuts: cutting, manipulating, freezing: inquires into frozen surfaces, flat topographies, and the intersection between two and three-dimensional space.
This project engages the flatness of winter, interrupting the horizontal surface plane of ice with ice. Or in other words, interrupting one abstraction with another. The ice saw enters the conversation of abstraction as it rides a fine line between saw as a functional object and the aestheticization of saw as an object of pure desire -the saw that only lives on the wall above the mantel piece. Produced digitally with a CNC router and WaterJET cutter, the saw connects a historical past to present near now when ice was harvested for refrigeration to a technological future where ice can be fabricated to make ski hills in Dubai.
