Marguerite Humeau Born 1986 in France Lives and works in London Marguerite Humeau is a French artist, who lives and works in London. She has recently graduated from the Royal College of Art, Design Interactions department (July 2011). Humeau’s work has been selected as “Best Design of 2011” by different international magazines such as I-D magazine, Blueprint Magazine, Fastcompany, Designboom, Core77, NPR, The Daily, we-make-money-not-art. Her work has been exhibited as part of the "Talk to Me" exhibition, curated by Paola Antonelli at the MoMA in New York until November 2011, and was recently exhibited at the Barbican Gallery in London and the Palais de Tokyo in Paris. One of her pieces has recently been acquired by the MoMA for its permanent collection. It also received a "Special Mention" in the VIDA 13.2 competition, and is part of the "jury's selection", Japan Media Arts Festival, 2011. Marguerite Humeau's work explores the fictional potential of scientific experiments and the role of science in the creation of contemporary myths. This speculative territory provides many narrative and performative opportunities. The work is introduced as an epic quest, setting up an enigma, documenting the journey, and presenting its final outcomes.

PROJECT PDF- 2011

"Back, Here Below, Formidable" is a quest which aim is to resuscitate the sound of extinct animals by reconstructing their vocal tracts. This is problematic from the scientific point of view: since the vocal tract is made of soft tissue, it does not fossilise. The only things that have been preserved through time are the surrounding bones. The inner parts have to be redesigned.

For more than six months I have been discussing with palaeontologists, zoologists, veterinarians, engineers, explorers, surgeons, ear and throat specialists, and radiologists.

Advices from experts as well as predictions are used to craft the roars of the new creatures.

The recreated beasts have adopted soft tissue from their living descendants. A redesign of the larynx and vocal cords, windpipes of estimated length and diameter, and a new, fresh artificial breathing produced by an air compressor.

The beasts are semi-real.

And suddenly, they roar in a non macabre but spectacular pandemonium.
