The Basic Law for the Federal Republic of Germany (German: Grundgesetz für die Bundesrepublik Deutschland, abbr.: GG) is the Constitution of Germany. It has gained recognition for its constitutional innovations since World War II , but is not widely appreciated amongst the German population. My diplomathesis “Formation GG – a visual guide to the Basic Law of Germany” wants to fill that gap and enhance the understanding of and the interest in the Basic Law.
Besides showing modern infographics “Formation GG” wants to emphasize the historical heritage of the German Constitution with typography and color. For this reason a mix of opposing retro fonts was used for specific purposes. The layout combines the style of newspapers with the style of historical documents, and the reduced application of color calls to mind prints of the early 20th century. On a format of 24 x 30 cm and 72 pages “Formation GG” provides an innovative, didactical, visual guide leading through the German Constitution.
