Observations of various aspects of consuming music in the social network Last.fm
Theme
Which artist is a »one-hit wonder«, and which has got a constant fan-community? Are the supporters of the band Radiohead
more receptive forwards various fashions of music than the fans of the hip-hop artist Nelly? In which towns do certain genres
of music cumulate, and in which countries is a newly brought-out album heard fi rst? These and other questions can be
investigated with the help of Last.fm, which is a social music-network with a personalized radio station. By listening to it, the
member continuously generates new data, which are saved in the public database being pertinent to it. We observed part of
these data for a period of four months and evaluated them in order to fi nd answers to the above questions, for the audience
of Last.fm. All visualizations were realized by using
the programming language and integrated development environment Processing.
