The Cognistère, or A Counter-Arrangement for Architecture in the Age of Permanent Education

year of making
Today education takes place as the acquisition of generic skills in increasingly generic spaces. We find our lives in an environment of frameworks. Frameworks present the contemporary venom to the creation of architecture, which is a discipline where elements rely on another, produce relations, whereas frameworks are only infrastructures of control.
Since the 1980s the universities dissolve into hollow frameworks for market-oriented and creative intellectual labor. My project makes an example of "BK City", the Architecture Faculty of TU Delft, and its trend to stage education as a consumption-oriented experience economy.
My critical project offers a counter-arrangement by challenging BK City’s will-to-the-city with a primary act of inhibition: The design for a Cognistère, an allusion to Charles Fourier’s Phalanstery, proposes to transform a generic office landscape into a vibrant locus of intellectual life conducted by a voluntary collective of 750 rent-paying debtors of architecture.
