Elio Caccavale was born in 1975 in Naples, Italy. He studied Product Design at Glasgow School of Art before going on to the Royal College of Art to complete a Masters degree in Design Products.

Elio is a faculty member of the College of Art, Science and Engineering at Dundee University. He is also visiting lecturer on the MA Design Interactions course at the Royal College of Art. In addition, he has held lecturer positions at Central Saint Martins College of Art and Design, Architecture Association, London Metropolitan University and research positions at Newcastle University in the Policy, Ethics and Life Sciences Research Centre, Reading University in the School of System Engineering (Cybernetics) and Imperial College in the Institute of Biomedical Engineering.

His work has been exhibited extensively, including at the Museum of Modern Art in New York and the Science Museum in London. Elio’s work is in the permanent collection of MoMA in New York and has been published by Phaidon, Thames & Hudson, Die Gestalten Verlag dgv, MIT Press and Centre Pompidou.

Elio is the co-author of Creative Encounters (Wellcome Trust, 2008), a book that explores the many opportunities and questions provided and prompted by collaborations between artists, designers, educators and scientists.

He is also the founder of Elio Caccavale Design Studio, a product and interaction design consultancy.

The Product Design Bsc programme educates students in a global context on how to approach the design of products in the rapidly changing technological, economic and social landscape. Our philosophy is simple: we aim to educate students to make products that work. To work socially, through a deep understanding of people and society; to work technically, through embedding cutting-edge technology into our products; to work economically, through working closely with global industries to ensure a market readiness and entrepreneurship at the highest level.

Science and Technology Platforms
Our expertise in digital electronics and renewable technology research provides our students with leading platforms for innovation. It feeds our teaching and our guidance, at all levels across all projects. This is why industries such as Microsoft Research work with us. We believe that we can explore what the future can be. This future includes potential new markets and product development, or social futures - our work anticipates how scientific and technological advances will shape our futures.

Industry Partners
We have links with industrial partners, such as Microsoft, NCR, Orange and Nokia. Furthermore our research programme, funded by global industries and the UK government, provides an opportunity to take students on as PhDs following graduation.

The Product Design programme at the University of Dundee has established a world-class reputation across industry, research and teaching. We have strong connections to the UK and global design economy – with tutors running successful design consultancies, operating on a global scale.

Our research has attracted a number of substantial grant awards including a £1.1m UK government award to explore new ways to connect disadvantaged communities to the digital economy; a five year industry PhD programme in self-service funded by the financial solutions company NCR; and a Microsoft Research PhD Scholarship to investigate digital navigation.
