KLARTEXT by Mona Garde
The diploma project from Mona Garde is about codes. Codes are everywhere. So she presents the interesting world of codes in a decoded way. Therefor she developed a couple of smart ideas, for example with the aid of UV light. The playful way to present an issue with its own characteristic is in this case the clearest and most practical resolution.

TABULAE ANIMALORUM URBANUS by Marcel Morach, Roland Krauer
This small and amusing booklet presents a bunch of animals which are well adapted to the urban areas. Where are the limits of evolution. The way of exaggerating an ordinary thing is a clever way of getting attention. Marcel Morach has succeeded to create something which provokes thinking and amusing at the same time.

DIY MAGAZINE KIT by Peter Ørntoft
Interesting idea. A magazine whose attitude is changing with his reader. We like the unadorned appearance of the basic set.


WHAT WE KNOW by Tilman Schlevogt, Jonas Beuchert, Patrick Oltean
First of all we just like the simplistic way of drawing attention to an current basic idea. We think it`s an effective way to handle with a problem by doing something totally antithetic. The blunt and technical form of the book completes the whole idea.


TOURISME by Kris Borgerink, Brigiet van den Berg, Yuri Veerman
The procedure of this project - to put themselves in a position (strange tourists) and than migrate into a small neighbourhood to catch something to react to, was insecure but well choosen to get authentic solutions. The "One-way Trash Bin" and the "Neighbourly Bench Map" are conclusions that have noticeable consequences in different ways.


NONSENSE-MACHINES MAGAGZIN by Friedemann Albert, Anne Baier, Arne Felgendreher
A dokumentation about nonsense machines which were made in a workshop. The light pastels and a smart and cheap binding is a good choice for the look of the booklet . The photography of the developed machines is the most specific part of this project. They consists of two layers one of them is transparent and represents the moving of the machines.

MEDUSA by Daniel Schludi
We like the way of problem solving in this project. The cooperation between the results of high technological eye tracking system and its directly translation trough the Medusa spotlight system.
We are impressed by the exceptional portraits. The fact that the pictured person affects its photography creates a new kind of "how to reflect pictures".

EINUNDZWANZIG MAL DREI by Steffen Bertram
The book designed by Steffen Bertram deals with a serious and important issue. By his cautious design and brilliant photograhy he has managed to communicate this issue in an ease and intelligent way. The whole theme by itself is to appreciate because it frankly faces with something which is mostly undiscussed.

UNDERCOVER by Vera Schäper
Who wouldn't like to be a detective while reading "Sherlock Holmes". The add-ons of this book satisfy this desire. They are playful and well adapted to the possibilities of a printed matter. It is amazing how many different types of hiding and seeking information are included in this book.
We can imagine that it will be an advanced experience of investigative methodes while reading this book.

Short portrait

For students our university gives a lot of leeway to have a go at own projects in addition to the regular courses of study. Sometimes it is surprising how such a small number of students is creating such a diverse and creative atmosphere. We have a feeling that the creative power is strong at this place. And that is tremendous infective.

Constantly we could attend interesting events and projects, whether initiated by the professors, students or the adjacent museums. Unfortunately, very often you have to be able to be in two place at once to join everything.

The project "Avoid Red Arrows" is our student collective for type design at the Karlsruhe University of Arts and Design. Since 2008 "Avoid Red Arrows" has been publishing typefaces of students in the name of the university. Right from the start "Avoid Red Arrows" was not only the plattform offering typefaces for the digital format. There is always space for all sorts of experimental type projects - like photography, objects, programming or generative design and so on.

The idea was developed during a typedesign course. Due to the fact that the fonts will not be used we collected all fonts and have published them. Because of the permissive structure and with the help of our university we are able to advance our own workshop offerings and projects. So we organized workshops for students of all departments of our school. The main thing in this workshops is to create a inspirational atmosphere in which all the participants can develop new ideas. At the same time they learn a lot from each other.

"Avoid Red Arrows" was founded by the communication design students Stefanie Miller, Marko Grewe, Simon Roth and Peter Stahmer. The four students who are studying in different semesters discuss their typedesigns and are the contacts for interested fellow students.
