Traces of material consumption on objects are self-explanatory. They are responsible for decreasing aesthetics and function and tell us where and how intense usage in time affects things. To put it bluntly, these points are the most important fields of the object. Therefore the volume, which disappears trough usage in time, is the essential material.
According to this provocative thesis, within the project “Pretty Horrible” I researched for disappeared material on a school chair, a butcher knife, a spoon, a rubber and a church-stair. Thereafter I fixed and reconstructed this missing volumes. Trough a signal colour I put the visual attraction onto the reconstructed material; the unused and theoretically less important parts play a passive role, defined by white wire. The aim was to outline the invisible and disappeared and to compare visually wear and tear on different objects. Furthermore I wanted to explore how I can incorporate this experimental approach to functionalism into the design process.
