The project 'Ben je bang voor vergif?' ('Are you afraid of poison?') is comprised of: a series of twelve images, the novella 'Zalen' ('Rooms') and a digital, interactive recording. It came about as a reaction to classic, western fairy tales. While the characters in these stories are simple and one dimensional, the narrator in 'Zalen' is not. He is a complex and layered construction of contradictions. While he realizes this, he refuses to accept it. Instead of ignoring them, he looks for a way to fix these inner conflicts. The traditional role of the reader is also overturned. We are not guided through the story along a red line: the piece forces us to find our own path with the red line that has been given to us. There is no one way, no definite outcome. What seems at first glance dark and chaotic, we have to shape into a story, our own story.
For this project the artist Wai Ming Ng worked together with the writer Joris Buitendijk.
