A pair of posters responding to The New York Times article series "Invention for 900 Hands”, about the making of a Steinway piano. The articles focus on the idea that a piano is made through an intricate process of many hands collaborating over a long period; hence the final result is always unpredictable. I designed these posters to change over time through interaction with people. The black poster is made of sticker paper and cut in complex shapes—the combination of the phrase "only time will tell" and piano keyboards. As the posters hang in a public space, people can peel off any part of the black poster and stick it on the blank white poster. While the first activity implies the process of carving wood to make a piano, the second implies playing music with the piano, emphasizing the unexpected melodies it makes. Depending how people interact with the posters, the words may be revealed in positive or negative (or both) shape—they rely on viewer's participation and anticipation.
